Valgerður Sigurðardóttir

With her first solo exhibition in Iceland since moving to Belgium, Valgerður Sigurðardóttir (b. 1992, Reykjavík — lives and works in Antwerp) returns home with a brand-new series of ceramic works. This is a homecoming in more than one sense. She is not only returning geographically, but also ideologically — and in a way, to herself. The works mark a journey that is deeply personal, feminine, mysterious, powerful, and vulnerable all at once.
At first glance, her drawings and sculptures may seem simple, but beneath the surface lies a turbulent complexity. She begins with something familiar — domestic scenes, everyday details — and then blends in dreams, emotions, and vague memories. She plays with the boundaries between safety and insecurity, between what we know and what unsettles us. As in her 2024 exhibition Talking to an Angel at Keteleer Gallery, she draws from personal experience: birth, motherhood, loss, and longing. But she doesn’t stop there — she seeks connections to something larger, the shared realm of human experience — a collective space where archetypes, stories, and dreams merge into one.
Valgerður Sigurðardóttir (b. 1992, Reykjavík, Iceland. Lives and works in Antwerp, Belgium) holds a master’s degree in sculpture from KASK in Ghent, Belgium. Previously, she studied at the Royal Academy of Arts in Antwerp as an Erasmus student from the Iceland University of the Arts, where she earned her BA degree. In 2017, she was one of the founders of the exhibition space ABC Klubhuis. Since 2013, she has participated in numerous group exhibitions in Reykjavík, Oslo, Ghent, Antwerp, and Romania.
