Going through grief
Vala Rut Sjafnardóttir Friðjónsdóttir

Since my son died from cancer last year our family has been going through so much grief.
As a way of dealing with this grief we started going on hikes with our friends. We called our walking group: “We just continue” as a reference to what my son said when he was told that he had incurable cancer.
These walks have been, and still are, our anchor during an incredibly difficult time. At these walks I started taking photos, nature photos, of things that captured the eye. These photos, or moments, that I captured reminded me again of the beauty that still exists in the little things and the little moments, despite this great grief that we are going through.
I call the exhibition “Going through grief”, and it refers both to the fact that we are going through grief, but it also refers to the fact that we are using these walks to deal with our grief.
When I chose the names of the photos I had in mind that it was something that described love and grieve. Exhibition guests can therefore put the words: Grieve is... , Love is... , in front of the names of the photos to emphasise the meaning. Love and grief are inseparable. You only grieve if you have loved.
The exception opens on Tuesday 20th of May at 18.00 and will be open until Sunday 25th of May.
All the profits of photos sold will go directly to the Society of children with cancer in Iceland, or SKB.
