The Seeress's Dream

Arthur Ragnarsson

Arthur Ragnarsson

Arthur Ragnarsson works mainly in graphite and acrylic on canvas and the subject matter is related to Icelandic cultural history and nature. In this exhibition, the artist is exploring the beauty of the world beyond everyday life and touching the strings of consciousness in the national soul.

Arthur was born in Siglufjörður in 1958 and graduated from the Icelandic School of Fine Arts and Crafts in 1981. Arthur moved abroad after graduating but now lives and works mostly in Sweden. He also has work facilities in both Finland and here in Iceland, which he uses for a good part of the year.

Visual art is Arthur's lifeline in terms of his origins, cultural history, and nature. The subject revolves around both physical connections with the environment as well as subjective relationships and memories. In his work, the artist is seeking empathy and familiarity in a society that has become almost unfamiliar to him. The artist finds the beauty behind everyday life as he develops a mindset and working methods that obey the subconscious. Arthur looks beyond his own experience and lets himself be guided by random mastery rather than aiming for a predetermined result. There, laws fall into place and talent prevails. On this path between dreams and reality, Arthur is the student, where the working process itself is the teacher.

Arthur works with selected galleries in Germany, Iceland, Sweden, and Finland. The artist's best-known work in Iceland is the sculpture Herring Girl, which stands on the pier at the Herring Museum in Siglufjörður. The artwork, which was funded, among other things, with support from the Icelandic government, was unveiled by Prime Minister Katrína Jakobsdóttir in July 2023.
