The deadline for the first application round in 2024 is at 16.00 Monday, February 12. The role of the Icelandic Visual Arts Fund is to award project grants in the field of visual arts and art research.

The Fund provided the following types of grants:

  • Preparatory grants - awarded for the preparation and development of major projects for which an application can later be made for implementation funding.
  • Exhibition grants - for exhibition projects within a defined time frame, with a beginning and end.
  • Publication, research, or other projects - awarded for research on the work of Icelandic artists and for publication of writings about Icelandic art history and the work of Icelandic artists, in addition to other public projects not included in the previous categories.

The Fund’s minimum grant amount is 300.000 ISK and the maximum grant amount is 3.000.000 ISK. The fund covers up to 70% of the estimated total cost of a project, and hence applicants must cover 30%.

Eligible applicants are visual artists, curators, art historians, and self-employed professionals in the visual art field. Please note that if the project is an exhibition series or group exhibition organizers are advised to hand in one application for the project rather than applications from individual participants. In cases where participants choose to send in individual applications covering their contribution, it is advised not to also apply to the whole project. If an applicant has previously been awarded a grant from the Visual Arts Fund, a final report must have been received before a new application is considered.

In this application round, the fund will allocate 40 million ISK. The result is announced at the end of April. The Visual Arts Council determines the allocation from the Visual Arts Fund.
