Time Correction Melodies

Tumi Magnússon’s Time Correction Melodies is a four-channel video- and sound installation, a work in progress since 2021. The piece features four recordings of irregular movements -each involving some form of mundane action that generates sound. These movements, captured within each video frame, are altered so that each lasts precisely for two seconds. This temporal equalisation creates a slow, steady rhythm that subtly alludes to the rhythm of human breathing.

These time alterations also influence the pitch of the accompanying sounds, producing fragments that verge on melody. Played together, the four channels form a peculiar, layered harmony - an acoustic environment that is at once disorienting, familiar, and deeply evocative.

Image and sound hold equal weight in the work. Each projection is accompanied by a speaker, giving the impression that the sound emanates directly from the image. At the center of the exhibition space, the sounds merge into a unified whole; as visitors move through the room, the distinct sonic threads re-emerge.Tumi Magnússon (b. 1957) is one of Iceland’s most acclaimed artists, known for his long-standing exploration of the relationship between image and sound. His work often incorporates repetition, rhythm, and temporal perception, using mundane materials and circumstances to construct deeply sensory environments that invite heightened awareness.

Born in Iceland and based in Copenhagen, Tumi studied at the Icelandic College of Art and Crafts and at AKI – Academie voor Beeldende Kunst in the Netherlands. He has held over 60 solo exhibitions and participated in numerous group exhibitions at all major art institutions in Iceland as well as internationally, including across Europe, the United States, Mexico, Uruguay and New Zealand.

Tumi was a professor at the Iceland University of the Arts from 1999 to 2005, and a professor at the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen from 2005 to 2011. Throughout his career, Tumi has worked across nearly all visual media, transitioning from painting to photography, video, and sound installations.
