Form and Balance
Søren West

Søren West is best known for his monumental decorations, in public spaces as well as public interiors, frequently made in nordic granite. He is deeply interested in Sigurjón Ólafsson‘s work and selected sculptures from his collection to stand in dialog with his skulptures in this exhibition. In a short essay in the exhibition catalogue, he says that during the preparation for this exhibition he studied the bulk of Ólafsson‘s work and has felt a fraternal connection with this 55 years older colleague, whom he never met.
Søren West was born in 1963 in Copenhagen. 1983−1988 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Odense and furthered his studies at the Studio Corsanini in Carrara, Italy. Since 1995 he has lived and worked in Egeskov Mølle in Fyn, Denmark. He is a Member of the Artists' Association Denmark, the Danish Sculptors Society and the workshop Gæsteatelier Hollufgaard in Odense. He has given lectures and courses at many Danish schools and a variety of high schools. He was the leader of the sculpture institute at Svendborg Art School, in 1992−1996 and 2000−2001. Since 1986 he has held numerous exhibitions and sculpture projects in Denmark and abroad.
Søren West mainly works with granite and marble, frequently combined with bronze, steel, or wood. His works explore aesthetic and dynamic statements in relation of balance, distance and contrast between and within the materials and surfaces used.
